LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Wildcat soccer team (9-4-2, 5-2-1 SLC) got back to its winning ways Sunday afternoon against one of the top teams in the Southland Conference, the McNeese Cowgirls (9-6, 5-3 SLC). ACU scored right before the half, and added two more goals in the final 45 minutes to earn a 3-0 victory. The defense was spectacular as well, helping to post the fourth shutout of the season. The win also secures ACU's third consecutive appearance in the Southland Conference Tournament.
The Goals
- 44' | Christina Arteaga matched her single-season best mark of 10 goals in a season (2018) with a penalty kick just 12 seconds before halftime. After a foul in the box, Arteaga took advantage to get ACU on the board.
- 51' | Freshman Caylen Wright, who scored a goal Friday night at Lamar, added her sixth goal of the year in the second half. It was a freshman frenzy of a play as fellow rookies Natalie Jones and Jordan Michie combined for the assists.
- 77' | Jones added a goal herself off a pass from reigning Southland Conference Freshman of the Year Alyssia Anuat.
The Numbers
- Arteaga has now scored a goal in five straight, the longest streak of her illustrious career. Her previous streak was three games last season.
- The freshmen are making an incredible impact. Jones has had goals in three of the last five games she's played and assists in four of the last six games she's played. Wright has also scored a goal in three of the last four games.
- ACU outshot McNeese 8-2 in the second half, and ultimately led 11-8 in that category for the game, including 6-4 in shots placed on goal.
- Rachel Johnson recorded her 13th career shutout Sunday, recording four saves in the process. The redshirt senior improves her season save total to 38.
- Arteaga and Wright each recorded three shot attempts to lead the way.
Head Coach Casey Wilson
"Today was a good win and a great response to Friday. We did a lot of good things Friday night and we were not worried about bouncing back today. We know who we are and what we can do. McNeese is a good team, but we came in prepared today. We were ready to execute our roles and our responsibilities."
