ABILENE – ACU junior safety Bolu Onifade – who last month was selected as one of eight team captains for the 2018 Wildcat football squad – has been voted second team preseason All-Southland Conference, the only Wildcat to be voted to the team.
Nicholls – which finished tied for third in the league in 2017 but made its first NCAA Division I FCS playoff appearance since 2005 – led the lead with 14 total selections, followed by defending league champion Central Arkansas with 11 and McNeese with 10. Sam Houston tallied nine preseason all-conference honorees, followed by Stephen F. Austin with six and Southeastern Louisiana with four. ACU, Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word and Lamar each had one player selected to the team.
In his first season as a starter in 2017, Onifade led the Wildcats in solo tackles (52) and total tackles (76) as he, Brandon Richmond and Erik Huhn teamed up to form one of the top safety trios in the Southland Conference. Onifade had three games of double-digit tackles: 17 vs. Colorado State (Sept. 9), 13 vs. Stephen F. Austin (Sept. 23) and 11 vs. Southeastern Louisiana (Oct. 21). He enters his junior season with 92 career tackles.
"Bolu had a great junior year and has developed himself into a great player who does a good job of bringing accountability to our program," ACU head coach Adam Dorrel said. "He's a complete player who can play the pass and support the run. We're expecting big things out of him this year."
The 2018 preseason poll will be revealed next Thursday (July 19) to kick off Southland Football Media Day at the Hilton Houston Post Oak Hotel. Fans can watch the media day proceedings at the following links: morning session and afternoon session.
