SAN ANTONIO – Abilene Christian women's tennis pitched its sixth shutout of the season and improved its placing within the Southland Conference following its 7-0 win at Incarnate Word Saturday at the Mabry Tennis Courts.
The Wildcats are now 13-7 overall and 7-3 against the league with only Monday's 11 a.m. dual at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi remaining. ACU has won its last five matches, moving the Wildcats into fourth place and they can finish as high as third if they and at least one other team next week beats the Islanders. McNeese sits atop the Southland Conference standings at 9-1 followed by Northwestern State at 8-1.
ACU today cruised to the doubles point thanks to consecutive 6-1 wins from their No. 1 and 3 duos of Lucile Pothier/Nini Memishishi and Ileana Mocciola/Autumn Crossnoe, and in singles, all the Wildcats' triumphs were in straight sets.
At No. 3, freshman Nini Memishishi defeated Sara Djurdjevic, 6-4, 6-0, for her eighth-straight singles win that lifted her overall and conference records to 16-4 and 9-1, and at No. 5, junior Autumn Crossnoe won her seventh-straight decision, beating Alejandra Tamayo, 6-1, 6-3. Crossnoe is fourth on the team with 11 wins, two behind seniors Lucile Pothier and Whitney Williams, who both were winners today at the No. 1 and 2 positions.
Pothier doubled up Matea Zemunik, 6-3, 6-3, in improving to 8-2 vs. conference opponents, while Williams toppled Jelena Dordan, 6-4, 6-2. Williams has a 7-3 record vs. Southland foes.
Also winning this afternoon were sophomore Sarah Eleanor Adams, 6-2, 6-0, vs. Alejandra Landaluce at No. 4, and freshman Ileana Mocciola at No. 6 vs. Rachel Sadiq, 6-3, 6-3.
