Football team elects seven captains for 2017 season

ABILENE – Seven senior ACU football players were voted captains of the 2017 squad in a team-wide vote late Wednesday afternoon.

Offensive captains for the season will be quarterback Kade Munden, tight end Trevor Crain and running back De'Andre Brown, while defensive captains will be tackle Dante Hibbert, end Dylan Douglass, linebacker Sam Denmark and linebacker Royce Moore.

ACU head coach Adam Dorrel said the team will have another vote at the end of fall camp to determine the eighth and final captain. He also complemented his team on their selection of captains for the upcoming season.

"These seven young men have been leaders on and off the field since the new staff got here in January," Dorrel said. "They've done everything we've asked them to do and are bought in to what we're doing to get this team ready to play the 2017 season. I know these seven guys – and the eighth when we add him late in fall camp – will provide tremendous leadership throughout the season."

Denmark is a two-time first team all-Southland Conference selection in 2015 and 2016 who will be a pre-season all-conference pick based on his first team post-season selection last year. He enters the 2017 season just 63 tackles short of becoming ACU's all-time leading tackler.

Brown, meanwhile, has rushed for 1,956 yards in the previous three seasons and is just 103 yards away from passing Charcandrick West (1,058 yards from 2010-13) for 10th on ACU's career rushing list. He needs to rush for 701 yards to move into fourth place on ACU's all-time rushing list.

OTHER ACU FOOTBALL NOTES
• Dorrel said he's pleased with summer workouts and the work of new strength and conditioning coach Bret Miguez.

"I'm very happy with the commitment I've seen from our players and the work they're putting in," Dorrel said. "We've had about 95 players stay for the summer, and those guys are putting in a tremendous amount of work. Bret has been very good with those guys. He's very structured and detail-oriented and that's working well. The guys are have shown a great attitude and are showing a continual effort to get better."

• Players will report for fall camp on Wednesday, Aug. 2, with the first practice set for Thursday, Aug. 3. ACU's season-opener will be Saturday, Sept. 2, against the New Mexico Lobos in Albuquerque, N.M., followed by a Saturday, Sept. 9, game against Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo. Game times for each of those contests are still to be determined.

• All ACU home games except for the Oct. 21 homecoming contest against Southeastern Louisiana are set for 6 p.m. kickoffs with the homecoming game set for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff. Those game times could change, however, depending on the Southland Conference television schedule.

• Season tickets for the inaugural season of Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium are still on sale and can be purchased acusports.com/tickets.
