3/7/2017 12:02:00 PM | Women's Basketball
ABILENE - Despite recording eye-catching performances as a scorer and defender for the entirety of her four-year career, Abilene Christian senior forward Suzzy Dimba can finally add the title of First Team All-Southland Conference to an already distinguished resume.
The league's voting body, which is composed of all 13 head coaches and each team's sports information director, Tuesday released its three all-conference teams plus list of honorable mentions and individual award winners. Suzzy was the lone Wildcat tabbed to the first team even though ACU tied for the league's best regular-season record at 16-2 in winning its second consecutive Southland Conference Championship. She also became the conference's first player to be named to four-straight All-Defensive Teams.
Senior Alexis Mason received second team honors and Lizzy Dimba received her first career postseason citation with a spot on the third team.
Suzzy was the lone forward on the league's first team as she was joined by four guards, including Southland Conference Player of the Year Taylor Ross, Central Arkansas' Maggie Proffitt, New Orleans' Randi Brown and Northwestern State's Beatrice Attura.
Second team distinctions were awarded to Mason – the league's 2015-16 Player of the Year – along with UIW's Celia Garcia Paunero and Lamar Cardinals Kiandra Bowers, Moe Kinard and Chastadie Barrs. Lamar placed third in the league at 15-3, and Barrs was voted the Southland's Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight year. Kinard – a sophomore – was selected as the league's Newcomer of the Year over Kierra Jordan of Central Arkansas.
The conference's third team honors went to Lizzy Dimba in addition to Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls guards Taylin Underwood and Cassidy Barrios, and post players Stevi Parker of Stephen F. Austin and UCA's Jordan.
Imani Robinson won the Southland's Freshman of the Year award over nine other nominees including the Wildcats' Breanna Wright and Nicholls' Tykeria Williams. UCA's Sandra Rushing won Coach of the Year honors as her team finished the regular-season on a 15-game winning streak.
The Wildcats will be cheering for Rushing and her Sugar Bears this week in Katy, Texas as a Southland Conference Tournament title for UCA likely will mean a second-straight WNIT appearance for the Wildcats. ACU hopes to find out its postseason destination and opponent Monday, March 13 during its selection show party scheduled for 9:30 p.m. in Gym D of the Money Student Recreation and Wellness Center. This event is open to the public.
