Sheehy challenges nation's sixth-ranked player in loss to Longhorns

AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore Josh Sheehy and senior Nico Agritelley knocked off No. 4 Texas' No. 1 doubles team Thursday night in the Wildcats' spring opener, 6-4, but that would be the only win Abilene Christian would garner as the Longhorns posted a 7-0 victory at their Weller Indoor Tennis Center.
"It's hard to look too good after a 7-0 loss and they don't give you any coins for winning your No. 1 doubles match, but Josh and Nico had a great win there, and unfortunately, just like last year vs. Texas Josh lost a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles," said head coach Hutton Jones. "But we're off, the season has started, and I felt that there was something definitely accomplished playing a team this good - and they're the No. 4 team in the nation for a reason.
"So for one of our teams to step up and win at the No. 1 position was awesome, and Josh came close as he had match point in the second-set tiebreaker ... lots of good things we saw tonight."
Agritelley and Sheehy were last off the doubles courts after beating the tandem of Leo Telles and George Goldhoff. Earlier in the match, Christian Sigsgaard and Yuya Ito shut out Henry Adams and Jonathan Sheehy, 6-0, and at No. 3, Julian Zlobinsky and Harrison Scott defeated Paul M. Domanski and Sebastian Langdon, 6-2.
In singles competition, Sheehy pushed the sixth-ranked Sigsgaard to a third set supertiebreak only to fall, 10-6. Sigsgaard lost the first set 6-3, and then came back to win in set No. 2 7-6 (9-7).
The remaining five Wildcats: Agritelley, Jonathan Sheehy, Adams, Hunter Holman and Domanski all lost in straight sets.
The Wildcats' challenging weekend-long road trip continues Friday with a 6 p.m. match at SMU, and on Sunday they're in Norman to play the national finalists from No. 12 Oklahoma.
