ABILENE – Fourth-year Abilene Christian women's basketball coach Julie Goodenough Friday was honored with the Chuck Moser Coach of the Year Award. Goodenough received the honor in recognition of her team's Southland Conference regular-season championship season in which the Wildcats went 26-4 overall and 17-1 vs. the league in earning a postseason appearance in the WNIT.
Abilene High School boys' basketball coach Don Heseman was the winner of this year's Male Coach of the Year Award.
The Moser Award has been presented annually by The Rotary Club of Abilene to the city's top male and female coach since 1999, and is named after the legendary Abilene High School football coach, who led the Eagles to three straight state championships from 1954-56. Moser compiled a 141-28-2 win-loss record as a head coach in Texas and Missouri, and as a player he was part of a Missouri Tiger team that went to the 1939 Sugar Bowl.
The Moser Award traditionally goes to a high school coach, as Goodenough is only the area's third collegiate coach to pick up this honor. Hardin-Simmons women's basketball coach Shanna Briggs earned this award in 2003 and McMurry track and field head coach Barbara Crousen won it six years later in 2009.
Additional notable winners of the Moser Award include LeAnn Thomsen, the wife of former ACU head football coach Chris Thomsen, who received the honor in 2010 while coaching Wylie volleyball. Former ACU basketball player Hunter Cooley was a 2005 recipient with Jim Ned boys' basketball, and current Baylor football coach Art Briles won the inaugural Moser Award in 1999 when coaching at Stephenville High School.
Goodenough and the Wildcats will celebrate their successful 2015-16 season Thursday, April 21 during its 'Root for the Home Team' event, which will feature special guest and author Melanie Shankle. The event is open to the public and begins at 7 p.m. at the Williams Performing Center Arts Center.
Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased through acu.edu/basketball.
