ABILENE – The ACU Wildcats get their first crack this season at one of the Southland Conference elites this weekend when they host the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game series at Crutcher Scott Field.
Friday's first game is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch, followed by Saturday's game at 2 p.m. and Sunday's series finale at 1 p.m. The Wildcats are 9-7 on the season and 2-1 in the Southland after beating Texas-Permian-Basin, 10-0, Tuesday afternoon at home. ACU opened Southland Conference play two weekends ago by winning two of three games from Nicholls in a three-game series in Thibodaux, La. ACU was then swept in a three-game series last weekend at nationally ranked Oklahoma State.
The Wildcats have been led in the early part of their season by a pitching staff that has a combined ERA of 3.56 on the season. Senior
Kyle Carroll – who will get the start Friday – is 2-2 with a 1.93 ERA in his first season on the mound after playing shortstop for the Wildcats last season.
The other two starters for the weekend are scheduled to be senior righthander
Garrett deMeyere (2-1, 2.82 ERA) on Saturday and senior lefthander
Aaron Mason (3-1, 2.14 ERA) on Sunday.
The offensve pounded out 18 hits in Tuesday's win and is hitting .268 on the season. ACU is led by junior
Russell Crippen, who is hitting .304 with one home run and a team-best seven RBI, while senior catcher
Alex Copeland is hitting .302 with three RBI.
Aaron Draper and
Braxton Wilks also have seven RBI, while junior transfer third baseman
Austin Call is hitting .300 with six RBI in 11 games (eight starts).
Friday's game will feature two of the top pitchers in the league with Carroll going for the Wildcats and facing Southeastern's terrific Kyle Cedotal, who boasts a 2-2 record and a 1.44 ERA that ranks third in the conference. He has 42 strikeouts against just six walks in 31 1/3 innings
of work.
Southeastern will also send Mac Sceroler (1-2, 4.24 ERA) to the mound Saturday and Domenick Carlini (2-0, 1.82 ERA) to the mound Sunday.
The Lions' offense has already hit 12 home runs in 17 games and is led by Jameson Fisher, who is hitting .424 with five home runs and 21 RBI with the latter two numbers leading the league in the early part of the season.
