ABILENE – Abilene Christian men's tennis had its seven-match winning streak snapped in a 4-3 loss to the nation's No. 3 JUCO team from Tyler during its home opener Friday at the Teague Center, but the Wildcats immediately started a new one as they swept singles in a 6-1 win over Trinity – the eighth-ranked team in NCAA DIII.
Both schools have been constants on ACU's schedules for decades, and with five singles competitors ranked among the top 20 at the JUCO level ACU head coach
Hutton Jones fully expects the Apaches to win their 13th national title later this spring.
The Wildcats certainly were left smarting after Tyler won the doubles points. The Apaches' top-line and nationally second-ranked pairing of Ferran Calvo and Enrique Pardo doubled up ACU's
Nico Agritelley and
Josh Sheehy, 6-3, and at No. 3 doubles, Tyler placed its ninth-ranked duo of Ryan Brough and Logan Powell, which beat ACU sophomores
Paul Domanski and
Brad Gleason, 6-3.
The No. 2 doubles match between ACU's
Henry Adams and
Jason Proctor vs. Tyler's Phillip Franken and Ciro Lampasas was left unfinished with the Wildcats ahead, 5-2.
Victories continued to be hard to come by for ACU in singles as Domanski was the lone Wildcat to win in straight sets as he beat Franken at No. 6, 6-4, 6-4.
Closer to the top, senior
Jason Proctor topped No. 5 JUCO Brough, 4-6, 7-6, 10-4, at the No. 2 position and Sheehy pushed his winning streak at No. 1 to ten-straight matches. The Arlington, Texas, native this afternoon followed a three-set comeback win over Calvo – the No. 1 JUCO singles' player – 1-6, 7-6, 7-6 with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 performance over Adam Krull, who is No. 13 in NCAA DIII.
Sheehy is now 10-1 in spring singles. Domanski has the team's second-longest winning streak at five matches and is now 7-3 on the year, while Proctor has won his last four to jump a game over .500 at 6-5.
The remaining Wildcats all lost to Tyler's nationally ranked players from lines 3 to 5 in straight sets, although a majority of the scores were very close. No. 16 Lampasas beat Agritelley at No. 3, 6-4, 7-6. No. 32 Pardo edged
Hunter Holman in the first set en route to a 7-6, 6-1 victory, and No. 47 Jonah Candelario defeated Adams, 6-4, 6-2.
ACU's match vs. Trinity started quite similarly as its one with Tyler with the Wildcats losing close matches at No. 1 and 3 to start the dual trailing, 1-0. But singles proved to be no issue at all as the six Wildcats won in straight sets with 6-4 serving as closest margin of victory.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday at No. 14 Texas Tech (3:30 p.m.). A link for live results is available on both the ACU and Texas Tech athletics web sites.
