AUSTIN, Texas – The 24th-ranked Longhorns sent 17 batters to the plate as part of a 12-run first inning and went on to defeat Abilene Christian softball, 15-1, during the first game of the four-day Texas Invitational.
The Wildcats and Longhorns meet again Friday at noon and will have their game televised to a nationwide audience on the Longhorn Network.
Freshman Allison Turner started for the Wildcats (2-8) and gave up a bases-clearing double with one out to Regan Hathaway that gave Texas (11-0) its first lead at 3-0. Two additional singles, a hit batsman, and walk followed, leading the Wildcats to bring in senior Julia Montoya, who then surrendered a bases-loaded hit to leadoff batter Devon Tunning that made it 8-0.
Montoya gave up another four runs on as many hits in the first frame before striking out Christina Bardwell and getting Stephanie Ceo to ground out for outs No. 2 and 3. Texas added three more runs (two earned) against Montoya in the second, but wouldn't generate any additional offense against junior transfer Casey-May Huff.
Huff allowed just one hit tonight over 3.0 scoreless innings (one strikeout) and stranded three runners in scoring position between the second and third innings. She then retired the side in order in the fourth.
ACU's offense recorded four singles and drew four walks against starter Tiarra Davis and Kristen Clark. Junior Taylor Brown scored the team's lone run in the fourth on Holly Neese' RBI single down the left-field line. Brown also walked to lead off the first and third innings but was stranded each time.
