Mason hits the trifecta with third consecutive Southland honor

ABILENE – Abilene Christian women's basketball junior guard Alexis Mason Monday once again was announced by the Southland Conference as its Player of the Week. The McKinney, Texas, native has received the league's award each of the last three weeks as the Wildcats (16-2, 7-0 Southland) have pushed their winning streak to 12 games.
Mason is the first women's basketball player to earn this honor three weeks straight since Central Arkansas' Megan Herbert won it following weeks 12, 13 and 14 of the 2011-12 season.
ACU finished its three-game road trip last weekend with victories at Sam Houston State, 87-76, and Incarnate Word, 86-71. Mason scored 17 points Thursday night vs. the Bearkats on 6-14 shooting with four treys and on Saturday she reached 1,000-career points with 26 vs. the Cardinals as she again buried four 3-pointers in a 7-of-12 effort from the floor.
Mason's defensive efforts also were on display this week. She twice tied her career high with four steals against the Bearkats and Cardinals and tied a team-season and career high with seven assists during the win at Sam Houston.
Mason has scored 12 or more points in each of her seven Southland games and is currently tied for first place in league scoring with Sam Houston's Shernise Robertson at 20.6 ppg (conference games only).
Mason additionally ranks among the Southland leaders with a .484 field goal and .412 3-point field goal percentage and 2.4 steals per game.
The Wildcats are at home this week Wednesday and Saturday for games against Houston Baptist and Lamar, which are scheduled to tip off at 7 and 2 p.m.
ACU has won its last 10 games at Moody Coliseum dating back to last season.
Honorable mention for Southland Player of the Week went to Central Arkansas junior guard Brianna Mullins, UIW senior guard Aricka Adams, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi senior guard Shola Adebayo, Lamar freshman guard Chastadie Barrs and Nicholls senior guard LiAnn McCarthy. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland women's basketball sports information directors.
Each school's sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
