Freshman Sheehy takes down Rice's Gustafsson at No. 1 singles

HOUSTON, Texas - First-year player Joshua Sheehy continued to impress at the top line Friday by defeating Rice's No. 1 competitor and senior Adam Gustafsson in straight sets at the Brown Tennis Center, 6-3, 6-4.
A few days removed from a three-set battle vs. No. 12 Texas' Goldhoff, Sheehy this morning won his first set against Prairie View A&M's No. 1, Christian Waldron, 7-6, during an abbreviated 5-0 team victory vs. the Panthers, and later played to a 4-4 tie with sophomore Henry Adams at No. 1 doubles vs. Gustafsson and David Warren.
Warren previously faced Sheehy last fall in their Round of 64 match at the ITA Texas Regionals, prevailing 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-6.
Even though Sheehy toppled the November Conference USA Tennis Player of the Month, the rest of the Wildcats couldn't do the same in their matches against the nation's 58th ranked team in an eventual 6-1 loss.
There were some close scores, however, as senior Jason Proctor forced a third set at No. 2 vs. Tommy Bennett and sophomore Paul Domanski pushed Warren to a first-set tiebreak. Sophomore transfer Hunter Holman also had a strong showing in the first set at No. 5 vs. Jake Hansen.
Against the Panthers, ACU shutout its regional rivals for the second time in three seasons. The Wildcats won the doubles point thanks to wins at No. 1 and 3 from the teams of Sheehy/Domanski and Brad Gleason/Sebastian Langdon, and in singles they swept the No. 3 to 6 positions in straight sets.

Sheehy's and Proctor's matches at No. 1 and 2 were left unfinished.
The Wildcats return to action next weekend for matches Friday and Saturday vs. Oral Roberts and Southern Illinois - Edwardsville in Tulsa, Okla. Match times are 6:30 and 6 p.m.
