AUSTIN – Wildcat sophomore Diana Garcia Munoz turned in another quality early-season performance in the 1,500 meters here on a cool, windy Thursday night on the second day of the 88th annual Texas Relays at Myers Stadium.
Munoz, sophomore from Arizona's Tempe High School, finished fifth in Section B in 4:36.46 in a race won by UTEP freshman Lilian Koech in 4:32.03. Munoz ran 4:34.06 last week to earn Southland Conference women's athlete of the week.
The only other Wildcat to compete here Thursday was freshman pole vaulter Jaden Dement, who finished 12th at 16-0.75 in Section B in windy conditions.
Munoz ran in the middle of a tightly-grouped pack of 16 runners for the first 400 meters with the leaders going through in 1:19. She was ninth after 800 meters (2:30 for the leaders) and seventh at 1,200 meters (3:42). In the final turn Munoz moved to sixth and then to fifth in the final straightaway.
Last month she was fifth in the Southland indoor mile.
Dement, graduate of Clyde High School, cleared 16-0.75 on his second attempt to set a new personal collegiate record, but missed three times at 16-6.75. On his third attempt at 16-6.75, the wind blew the crossbar from the standards as he appeared to be successful.
Officials awarded him another attempt, but he failed to clear.
The event was won by Texas A&M junior Chase Wolfle at 17-8.5.
Saturday's ACU entries in the morning preliminaries include hurdlers Lexus Williams (women's 100 hurdles) and Jeremy Tatham (men's 110 hurdles), sprinter Johnathan Farquharson (men's 100 meters), and the men's 4x400 relay team.
Scheduled to run in the Friday evening finals are the men's sprint medley relay and the women's distance medley relay.
Meanwhile in San Marcos - 30 miles southwest of the state capital - several Wildcats competing in the discus and multi-events took part in the opening day of Texas State's Bobcat Invitational.
Freshman and defending Southland Conference Field Athlete of the Week Kai Schmidt continued to make a quick impression as he finished the 36-man discus competition with a sixth-place launch of 183-10 (56.05 meters). His mark was 14 feet better than the one he recorded last Thursday at the TCU Invitational and ranked him seventh on ACU's all-time performer list in between Tyler Fleet (184-1) and Manuel Brandeborn (183-5).
Cody Snyder of South Dakota won the competition behind an effort of 194-6 (59.28m), while the Southland's current No. 1 discus thrower Brett Olsen finished just one spot ahead of Schmidt in fifth place with a distance of 184-9 (56.31m).
In the decathlon, freshman Wyatt French and junior Luke Woods exited the first day with 3,565 and 3,479 points, respectively, against a field of six other competitors, three of whom represent Incarnate Word.
French came away with victories in the long (23-01.75) and high jumps (6-01.50) and was the runner-up in the 100m (11.08w) and 400m (52.27), while Woods was first in the shot put (42-4.00), third in the 100m (11.11w) and fourth in the three remaining events.
Sophomore Taylor Yantis is one of only four competitors in the heptathlon but she won all four events, starting with a 14.96 in the 100m hurdles and ending with a mark of 26.00 in the 200m to finish day one with 2,880 points.
Friday's Bobcat Invitational schedule features the conclusion of the multi-events, the hammer and high jump starting at 1 p.m., and track events beginning at 5 p.m. with the women's 1500m.
