Men's Tennis follows win at Murray State with consecutive road trip defeats

ABILENE - Abilene Christian men's tennis could not have asked for a better start to its road swing through Kentucky and Tennessee as it handed the Racers of Murray State a 5-2 loss Thursday for the Wildcats first win of the season.
But later that day, and again on Friday, the Wildcats were quieted by their opposition from Lipscomb and Austin Peay by scores of 7-0 and 6-1, respectively, leaving ACU with a 1-4 record at the start of its second season of NCAA DI competition.
Everyone who started for the Wildcats against the Racers, whether in singles or doubles, earned at least one victory as ACU swept doubles and captured five of seven singles contests in straight sets.
Unfortunately, that level of success did not carry over in duals vs. the Bison and Governors.
The Wildcats put up a real fight against Lipscomb (3-2) late Thursday with the No. 2 singles match extended to a third set and the No. 1 and 6 contests each going to a seventh point. But Alex Pavel held off Jason Proctor at No. 2, 5-7, 7-6, 10-4, while No. 1 Rob Mitchell edged Guilherme Gesser, 7-5-7-6, and No. 6 Thais Minet posted a similar score vs. Marco Bensley, 7-6, 7-5.
Bensley went on to earn ACU's lone point vs. Austin Peay (2-0) Friday, beating James Mitchell at No. 6 in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-2.
Nico Agritelley and Henry Adams also battled through a number of points vs. the Governors before being saddled with the loss. Aaron Jumonville topped Agritelley at No. 3, 7-6 (8-6), 0-6, 10-4, and at No. 5, Adams fell to Manuel Montenegro, 7-5, 7-6 (15-13).
The Wildcats return to action Feb. 7 for their indoor invitational feautring teams from Prairie View A&M, Trinity and Tyler.
