ABILENE - Abilene Christian's women's tennis team recorded a number of outstanding performances and impressive victories last weekend at the OU Classic.
The Wildcats' eight singles competitors combined to win 14 matches against players from eight nationally ranked programs, including No. 20 Oklahoma, No. 25 TUlsa and No. 59 Arkansas, while their three doubles teams went 8-4 led by a 3-0 mark from the rookie duo of Whitney Williams and Carli Knezevich.
Williams and Knezevich were placed in a five-team round robin bracket and earned victories over teams from Kansas, 8-4, Kansas State, 8-2, and Denver, 8-4.
ACU additionally had two of its doubles teams go 2-1 in the Red Draw. Junior Kaysie Hermsdorf and freshman Lucile Pothier reached the quarterfinals of their bracket with an 8-6 win over Barnhill/Slattery of Denver, while Nada Marjanovic and Ansley Boarman toppled Valenzulea/Galieva of North Texas in the first round, 8-5.
Unfortunately, both tandems were bounced into the consolation bracket by their quarterfinal opponents, but each was able to win an additional match.
In singles competition, Pothier, Marjanovic and Williams each picked up multiple victories as part of the 32-woman Switzer Draw. Pothier and Marjanovic led the Wildcats with three singles victories, while Williams and sophomore Erin Walker - who was in the top flight Boomer Draw - both posted a 2-2 record.
A native of Mouxy, France, Pothier beat Michelle Garpenlov of Denver, 6-1, 6-1, in a bye-round match, and then after losing to Livia Cirnu of Kansas State, 6-3, 6-3, she won each of her consolation matches against Morgan Barnhill of Denver, 6-2, 6-0, and Alexis Czapinski of Kansas, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Williams of Anchorage, Alaska, lost her bye-round match to Mary Wright of SMU, but later took down Czapinksi and Cirnu in three sets after being eliminated in the quarterfinals by Aleksandra Trifunovic of Wichita State.
Marjanovic also fell to Trifunovic in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-3, but not before first defeating Kansas' Lauren Pickens, 6-3, 6-1, Barnhill, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 and Cirnu, 7-6, 6-3 through the first three rounds.
Walker started her run through the Boomer Draw with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Sarah Dvorak of Texas Tech and 6-3, 6-1 decision over Denver's Maureen Slattery. Her semifinal opponent, however, was nationally ranked Shannon Hudson of Arkansas, who won 6-2, 7-5 and eventually settled for runner-up honors to Oklahoma's Lily Miyazaki.
Walker went on to finish fourth overall after losing the third-place match to Tulsa's Dobby Leenabanchong, 6-1, 6-0.
The Wildcats return to action in three weeks for ITA Regionals hosted by Baylor University Oct. 16-19.
