ABILENE - Abilene Christian's men's and women's tennis team each will be in action this weekend, taking part in large invitational fields hosted by New Mexico State and Oklahoma.
This year's women's roster will be visiting Norman, Okla. for the first time in their collegiate careers, while the men will make their annual trip to Las Cruces, N.M. for the Aggie Invitational.
ACU's men did quite well last year at New Mexico State, going up against competitors from Arizona, New Mexico, Western New Mexico, Northern Arizona, UT-Permian Basin and the host Aggies. Sophomore Nico Agritelley went 3-1 and reached the finals of his draw. Junior Jason Proctor finished fifth in his flight and both Marco Bensley and Gui Gesser went 2-2 in singles play.
The women's team used this weekend last fall to travel to Boise State, but by going to Oklahoma the Wildcats will face more of their regional rivals, including SMU, No. 20 Oklahoma, No. 74 Kansas, No. 59 Arkansas, No. 68 Kansas State, No. 67 Denver, No. 57 Wichita State, No. 66 North Texas and No. 25 Tulsa.
Erin Walker, Kaysie Hermsdorf and Brittney Reed are competing in the 16-competitor Boomer, Sooner and Stoops Draws, respectively, while Nada Marjanovic and freshmen Carli Knezevich, Ansley Boarman, Whitney Williams and Lucile Pothier all will be featured in the 32-competitor Switzer Draw.
The Wildcats' men's and women's teams defeated some pretty stiff competition last weekend at the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational, but ultimately lost more matches to the rain than they did to players from the likes of Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech and TCU.
Junior Kaysie Hermsdorf and freshman Lucile Pothier went 2-0 as a doubles team, and freshman Henry Adams won his first two matches in Flight 2 singles; however, none of them were allowed to continue their title pursuit as rain cancelled all but the main draw semifinals and championship matches.
Hermsdorf and Pothier beat the duos of Smith/Otero of New Mexico, 7-5, and Thomas/Birowski of UT-Arlington, 7-6, while Adams defeated New Mexico's Sean Baklini and Texas' William Jou by matching 8-5 scores.
Agritelley, who defeated Rice's No. 1 singles player Srikar Alla, 7-6, 6-3 Friday night, lost 8-6 to Bart Van Leijsen of New Mexico Saturday in the second round. Proctor also went 1-1, as he followed an 8-3 win over TCU's Blake Wiggins, 8-3, with a second-round defeat to Rice's Henrik Munch.
Senior Gui Gesser and Agritelley claimed a first-round doubles win, 7-6 (6) over the Red Raider duo of Nix/Holman, but then lost 6-4 to Wichita State's Ostojic/Gregurovic.
Three of four ACU women won their first-round matches at Midland. Sophomore Erin Walker beat Eliza Long of Baylor, 8-5. Senior Brittney Reed defeated Summer Collins of Kansas, 8-3, and Pothier, edged Alba Escalona Perry of Tulsa, 9-7. Unfortunately, all three went on to lose in the second round to opposition from Pepperdine, Rice and TCU.
The remaining members of the Wildcats' roster stayed in Abilene and cleaned house at the ACU Walmart Open.
Junior Nada Marjanovic - a 20-match winner from last spring - won the singles and doubles titles (with Ansley Boarman) over competition from Dallas Baptist, Tarleton State, and the University of the Southwest. Marjanovic battled her way past DBU's Natalie Gennisen in the second round, 6-4, 7-5 after receiving a first-round bye, and was then challenged by Wildcat freshman Whitney Williams in the finals, 5-7, 6-4, 15-13.
On the men's side, the No. 1 singles title was won by newcomer Paul Domanski, who doubled up Bensley in the finals, 6-3, 6-3. A championship-caliber player from New Braunfels High School, Domanski defeated all three of his opponents in straight sets, including Chrys Castro of Southwest, 6-4, 6-3, and Cannon Jones of DBU, 6-2, 6-2.
Bensley rebounded from his single's defeat to win the doubles title alongside freshman Brad Gleason over Mizera/Hernandez of the University of the Southwest.
