SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Abilene Christian soccer recorded its most convincing victory of the young season Friday night on the campus of Incarnate Word as the Wildcats scored five unanswered goals in a neutral-site match vs. UT-Pan American of the WAC.
The five goals were ACU's (3-4) most since defeating John Brown on the road last season on Sept. 6, 5-0.
UTPA - a first-year NCAA DI program - entered the match at 4-0-2 and scored the match's first goal in the seventh minute when Hanna Spets slipped one past starting goalkeeper Kelsey Dombrowski, who was making her first start of the season.
But it was all Wildcats after that. Senior Tiffany Ysassi netted the equalizer off a pass from freshman Peyton Bucklew in the 39th minute, and then fed Mitchell the game-winning assist just one minute later.
Mitchell again hit paydirt 95 seconds before reaching the halftime break thanks to a well-timed pass from sophomore Natalie Throneberry that pushed the Wildcats' advantage to 3-1.
Mitchell is the first Wildcat other than the program's all-time career-scoring leader Andrea Carpenter to register a multi-goal game since Megan Turner and Jacey Ferrara both did it vs. Texas Woman's on Oct. 21 of 2012. Carpenter had all three of the Wildcats' multi-goal outings during her senior year of 2013.
After halftime, freshman Chantal Kinsey buried a penalty kick past Aubrie Coley for her first career goal, and then Throneberry scored her first of the season 63 seconds later off an assist from rookie Chloe Fifer.
Throneberry and Ysassi each registered three points tonight with a goal and assist.
Dombrowski faced 16 shots over 90 minutes and made six saves, while her counterpart Coley was credited with nine stops as the Wildcats outshot the Broncs, 21-16.
The Wildcats return to action Sunday night at 7 p.m. at Texas Tech.
