ABILENE - Abilene Christian all-America sprinter Reyare Thomas represented her home country of Trinidad and Tobago earlier this week at the IAAF World Relays hosted by T. Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas.
Thomas - the 2014 Southland Conference indoor champion in the 60 and 200-meter dashes and 200m school record holder (23.51) - ran the third leg for her 4x100-meter relay that placed third with a time of 42.66 seconds, qualifying them for a spot at the 2015 World Championships.
The United States placed first with a championship record of 41.88, while Jamaica was second in 42.28. Thomas' team, which also included Kamaria Durant, Michelle-Lee Ahye and Kai Selvon, edged Nigeria (42.67) for third place by .01 seconds, while Great Britian (42.75) rounded out the top five.
Trinidad and Tobago finished second during its heat to Team USA with a season-best mark of 42.59. Thomas also ran the third leg during prelims.
In only two indoor seasons with the Wildcats, Thomas won 13 races including two Southland Conference championships and three Lone Star Conference titles in the 55m, 200m and 4x400m relay. She later became a NCAA Division II all-America in all three of these events, placing fifth in the 60m, fourth in the 200m and fifth with the 4x400m.
Thomas' outdoor season bests in the 100m and 200m are 11.30 and 23.23, while her indoor bests in the 60m and 200m are 7.37 and 23.51. She broke ACU's school record in the 200m several times during her junior season of 2013, with the last coming at the DII Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
Next for Thomas will be the Trinidad and Tobago National Championships hosted by Hasely Crawford Stadium in the capital city of Port-of-Spain, June 20-22. A native of Chaguanas, Trinidad and Tobago, Thomas will be joined there by former ACU teammate Osei Allyene-Forte, who is from San Fernando. ACU head coach Keith Barnier also will be in attendance to see if either of his student-athletes can qualify themselves for the XX Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom from July 23 to Aug. 3.
Thomas won her country's national title in the 200m in 2008 with a time of 23.54. Kelly-Ann Baptiste, however, is the defending national champion as she won last year's 200m in 22.36.
