ABILENE - Sophomore Johnathan Farquharson Wednesday was selected as the Southland Conference's men's track athlete of the week in recognition of his two victories last weekend at the University of Washington.
A native of Freeport, Bahamas, Farquharson is the second member of the track and field program to earn this citation in 2014, joining senior thrower Baptiste Kerjean. He also is the fifth Wildcat during the 2013-14 school year to be chosen as an athlete of the week along with cross country runner Chloe Susset, soccer forward Andrea Carpenter and basketball forward Suzzy Dimba.
In his final tuneup before the upcoming Southland Conference Championships, Farquharson won both the 60- and 200-meter dashes at the Husky Classic in Seattle with times of 6.77 and 21.88. His 60-meter time is the second fastest time in the conference this season.
Farquharson also remains the league's top performer in the 200m with a mark of 21.47 that he recorded on Jan. 18 at the Texas A&M 10-Team Invitational.
Each Southland school's sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
Receiving honorable mention status this week were Torin Crowder of Stephen F. Austin, Aaron Bennett of Lamar and Oliver James of McNeese State.
