Gerner's assists lead Wildcats to 3-0 win over Lady Demons
10/10/2014 2:33:00 PM | Women's Soccer
ABILENE - Sophomore defender Alyssa Gerner's performance Friday was truly offensive in the best way possible as her two first-half assists lifted Abilene Christian soccer to a convincing 3-0 win over Northwestern State at Shotwell Stadium.
The victory kept the Wildcats undefeated at home in conference play, raising their overall and Southland records to 7-6-1 and 4-1-1, while the Lady Demons dropped to 3-10-1 and 0-5-1. Northwestern State has yet to score on ACU through two meetings as it lost last season at home, 1-0, on a game-winner by Natalie Throneberry.
And it was Throneberry today who set the Wildcats' offense in motion, starting with her corner kick in the 21st minute that floated across to pitch to Gerner. The San Antonio native then popped the ball back into the goalmouth, where Leslie Snider headed it into the upper right corner above the outreached arm of goalkeeper Alex Latham.
Gerner recorded her second assist of the match - and third of the season - 10 minutes later, this time feeding rookie forward Deonna Calhoun, who skillfully headed the ball to Megan Baer despite being tangled up by two Lady Demon defenders. Calhoun's pass popped off the turf and right into Baer's line of fire as she headed the redirected pass straight over Latham.
The Wildcats scored their third and final goal two minutes into the second half when redshirt freshman Kate Seay buried her own rebound after her first attempt hit off the post.
Seay's and Baer's goals were the first of their careers.
Defensively, the Wildcats allowed only nine shots and two corner kicks as Kelsey Dombrowski pitched her first complete game shutout of 2014. A majority of her saves were caught on a hop, however, at the very end of the first half the crossbar stopped one of Cache Haley's two shots.
Dombrowski shutout the Lady Demons last season as well in addition to Southeastern Louisiana.
The Wildcats return to action Sunday at 1:30 p.m. vs. first-place Stephen F. Austin. The Ladyjacks play tonight at McNeese State.
