Tennis teams split twin bill vs. former NAIA champions from Auburn-Montgomery

MOBILE, Ala. – Abilene Christian tennis began its weekend road trip to the Gulf Coast with a split decision Friday morning vs. the men's and women's tennis teams of Auburn-Montgomery.

ACU's fifth-ranked women's team edged the Warhawks, 5-3, but the Wildcats' 16th-ranked men's program suffered an 8-1 defeat in which four singles matches were decided in three sets.

Sophomore Borja Cortes earned the Wildcats' only point today, winning his match at No. 5 over Othmane Lalami, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4, but earlier in the match Lalami and Zinelabidine Jouini beat him and partner Jason Proctor at No. 2 doubles, 8-5.

ACU's No. 1 doubles team of Hans Hach and Guilherme Gesser also lost its match, 8-5, to the third-ranked NAIA team of Tim Hewitt and Bence Toth, while at No. 3, Kyle Plum and Nicklas Wingord fell 8-2 to the tandem of Miguel Grifol and No. 2 singles player Nicolas Pinones.

Pinones would go on to defeat Hach at No. 1 singles, coming back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Gesser fell to sixth-ranked Hewitt, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.

ACU's women's team won only two of five contested singles matches against the short-handed defending NAIA champions, but started the dual with a 3-0 lead thanks to three doubles victories, one of which came by default.

Last year's all-America duo of Micah Hermsdorf and Hannah Kelley defeated top-ranked singles player Jade Curtis and Maria Fernanda Vargas at the No. 1 position, 8-2, while at No. 2, Brittney Reed and Laura Mongin held on to beat Tiffany William and Chanel Cunningham, 8-6.

Julia Mongin and Kaysie Hermsdorf won by default at No. 3 since the Warhawks were unable to field a team at that position. In singles, both sides opted not to play a match at No. 6 singles.

ACU's top-three players today – Micah Hermsdorf, Reed and Kelley – all lost in straight sets, but Laura Mongin crushed Vargas, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 for her 14th win of the season and Kaysie Hermsdorf pushed her win streak to six with a victory at No. 5 over Morgane Zowczak, 6-1, 7-5.

The Wildcats return to action Saturday morning with a doubleheader vs. nationally ranked West Florida.
