ACU's No. 14 Men's Tennis Team Wins Twice In San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO - Abilene Christian's 14th-ranked men's tennis team put a stop to its five-match losing streak Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of South Central regional foe St. Mary's and NCAA D-I opponent Texas-San Antonio.

The two victories lifted the Wildcats' season record to 12-11.

ACU dropped the doubles point to the Roadrunners, but rallied to capture four singles matches and ultimately clinched the 4-3 team victory behind senior Hans Hach's three-set win at No. 1 over Martin Ayala, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Hach also won his match vs. St. Mary's Andrej Klipa, 6-1, 6-4, and combined with Marco Bensley for an 8-2 win vs. the Rattlers' No. 3 duo of Matt Banner and Brien Galon.

Also crucial to the Wildcats' win over UTSA were Bensley, Borja Cortes and Nicklas Wingord, whose three-set victory at No. 3 singles over Joel Rubio tied the score at 3-3. Wingord won by scores of 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, while Cortes and Bensley won their matches at No. 5 and 6, respectively, in straight sets.

Cortes beat David Kelleher, 6-4, 6-0, and Bensley followed with a 6-0, 7-5 triumph over Eric Buchalter.

ACU beat St. Mary's, 5-2, in an abbreviated dual since the Wildcats had to travel north up I-10 to the Fair Oaks Ranch Country Club for their 2:30 p.m. match vs. UTSA.

The Wildcats started their dual vs. St. Mary's by winning two doubles matches. Hach and Bensley were done first at No. 3 and were then joined by the No. 2 duo of Cortes and freshman Jason Proctor, which beat Klipa and Carlos Olea, 8-6.

At No. 1 doubles, ACU's pairing of Guilherme Gesser and Wingord was edged, 9-8, by Zachary Nicholson and Jared Fellows.

Gesser and Wingord, however, came back to win their singles matches in straight sets. Gesser beat Nicholoson - the 16th-ranked player in the region - 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2, and Wingord doubled up Olea at No. 4, 6-3, 6-3.

ACU will return to action Wednesday, April 3 for a home doublheader vs. McMurry (9 a.m.) and Cameron (2:30 p.m.)
