ABILENE – Abilene Christian's 19th-ranked men's tennis team fell back to .500 on the season (12-12) and to 1-2 vs. the Lone Star Conference after suffering a hard-fought 5-4 defeat vs. No. 19 Cameron Thursday afternoon at the Eager Tennis Pavilion.
The Aggies, meanwhile, improved to 16-2 overall and 2-0 vs. the league. They'll finish their conference season next weekend vs. Incarnate Word.
“Cameron is a very good team, and I don't want to take anything away from their win, but we had our chances to come back and take the lead today,” said head coach Hutton Jones. “We're a young team and we're still hurting somewhat, but I still think we're getting better and can certainly be a better team a couple weeks from now at conference.”
The Wildcats began the match trailing 2-1 as both their No. 2 and 3 doubles teams faltered down the stretch. Senior Alfredo Desiati, who was playing his first doubles match in three weeks, lost at No. 3 alongside freshman Jason Proctor, 8-6, to the team of Dennis Merdan and Joao Fazendeiro, and then at No. 2, the Cameron duo of Nicolai Ferrigno and Dean Weigelt held off Borja Cortes and Nicklas Wingord, 9-8.
At No. 1 doubles, senior Hans Hach and sophomore Guilherme Gesser defeated Duje Janjic and Angelo Lencioni, 8-3.
Despite suffering from a shoulder injury for much of the season, Desiati tied the score at 2-2 following his straight-set win at No. 6 over Fazendeiro, 6-2, 6-2, but ACU quickly fell back into a hole when Merdan topped Gesser at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4.
The next four singles matches all went to a third set and Cameron eventually clinched it after Janjic came back from a set down to beat Wingord at No. 2, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
ACU's Cortes and Hach also rallied from a set down to win their matches at No. 5 and 1 singles, but only after the dual had been decided. Cortes beat Lencioni 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, while Hach – who is ranked sixth in NCAA Division II – won his Regional Championship rematch vs. No. 20 Nicolai Ferrigno, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Hach has won his last three matches in improving to 14-6 on the season.
The Wildcats return to action next week for three matches in Pensacola, Fla., vs. Auburn-Montgomery, New Orleans and host West Florida.
