1/29/2012 5:17:00 PM | Track & Field
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – For the third time in as many meets this season an Abilene Christian Wildcat added their name to NCAA Championships' list of automatic qualifiers, and during this weekend's action at the New Mexico Invitational Dennis Bain won the 60-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 7.95 seconds.
Bain finished second in the 60m hurdle prelims with a time of 8.11, but then cranked up his finals effort to beat unattached competitor Joshua Hembrough by .03 seconds and his previous season best by .46 seconds. Bain's performance makes him ACU's first automatic track qualifier of the season as he joins an elite group of Wildcats that also features senior Nick Jones (shot put) and junior Amanda Ouedraogo (triple jump).
In addition to his hurdles victory, Bain placed third in the 200m with a NCAA provisional time of 22.13 (when adjusted for track type and altitude conditions) and ran the first leg for ACU's winning 4x400m relay, which recorded a provisional mark of 3:19.62. Following Bain's lead were Osei Allyene-Forte, Banjo Jayesimi and Jordan Geary.
Geary, like Bain, also produced a provisional time in the 200m of 21.88, as did junior college transfer Shennae Steele, who recorded provisional marks in both the 200m (25.14) and 60m (7.72) dashes.
ACU student-athletes have recorded 16 provisional marks in 2012, 12 of which were registered during this weekend – 11 in New Mexico and one from Parker Petty in the heptathlon at the Air Force Academy Team Challenge.
Petty tallied a career best 4,836 points in finishing eighth out of 24 competitors and is currently ranked ninth among all DII heptathletes. His efforts included a personal record of 9.12 seconds in the 60 hurdles.
Multi-athletes Matthew Stark and Cassie Brooks placed 16th and sixth in their respective events. Stark's personal records in the heptathlon (4,279 pts.) included a leap of 12 feet, 11.5 inches in the pole vault and a time of 9.44 in the 60m hurdles. Brooks finished 185 points shy of a provisional score and clocked a career best time of 2:44.50 in the 800m.
During the first day of field events at New Mexico, all five Wildcats registered personal records in the weight throw while Levance Williams equaled his season best in the long jump of 24-6.5, which currently ranks second in all of DII to Grand Canyon's Aaron Hill (25-0).
Shalania Lakey and Alexis Wilder finished second and third in the weight throw with NCAA provisional marks of 54-03.25 and 54-02.50, while Jones fell close to five inches shy of the provisional standard despite producing a winning toss of 57.00.25. His teammates Lauren Hartwick and Milo Parsons each finished fifth with distances of 51-03.50 and 50-03.50.
During Saturday's action in the New Mexico field events Jones won his first shot put competition of the year with a distance of 58-07.50, and on the track, four more provisional times were posted by the likes of Karla Hope (400m – 57.31, Chloe Susset (mile – 4:58.19) and Lexus Williams (60m hurdles – 8.73).
Williams additionally led off the 4x400m relay, which lowered its previous provisional time to 3:53.62 in finishing third. Shennae Steele, Ayesha Rumble and Hope followed Williams on the relay.
