BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Abilene Christian women's tennis players
Micah Hermsdorf and
Julia Mongin recently finished a successful stay at the Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana University. Weekend highlights included Hermsdorf reaching the finals of flight #3 singles, and Mongin capturing a victory over #80 and two-time all-Big Ten selection Evgeniya Vertesheva, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (6).
"We had a couple good wins in singles this weekend," head coach
Hutton Jones said. "That was probably one of the best matches I've seen from Julie ... she played very smart and it was an unbelievable win."
After Hermsdorf defeated Notre Dame's Julie Sabacinski in the first round, she then topped Indiana's Kayla Fujimoto, 6-1, 6-2 in Saturday's semifinals. Unfortunately, she was denied a second straight singles title in as many weeks after falling Sunday afternoon to Georgia's Lauren Herring, 6-4, 7-5.
Mongin's memorable win over Vertesheva also was followed by a loss in the back draw of flight #1 singles, dropping a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Notre Dame's and 87th-ranked Jennifer Kellner.
The ACU men's and women's tennis teams return to action later this week for the ITA South Central Regional in Springfield, Mo.
