ABILENE – Senior defensive end Aston Whiteside and junior quarterback Mitchell Gale have each been selected first team pre-season all-America by d2football.com, which released its pre-season all-America team and pre-season poll on Monday.
The Wildcats – who last year finished 11-1 en route to their second Lone Star Conference championship in the last three seasons – are ranked No. 3 in the pre-season poll behind defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth and last year's runner-up, Delta State (Miss.).
After the Wildcats at No. 3, Grand Valley State (Mich.) checks in at No. 4, followed by Northwest Missouri State at No. 5, Texas A&M-Kingsville at No. 6, Shepherd (WVa.) at No. 7, Central Missouri at No. 8, Augustana (S.D.) at No. 9 and Albany State (Ga.) at No. 10.
North Alabama – ACU's opponent on Sept. 17 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington – comes in at No. 12, followed by LSC rival West Texas A&M at No. 16 and Super Region IV foes Missouri Western at No. 21 and Washburn at No. 22.
Gale – who threw for 3,595 yards and a school single-season record 38 touchdown passes last year – was previously selected the LSC's Pre-Season Offensive Player of the Year. Whiteside – who had seven sacks last year and was a first team all-region performer – was chosen as the LSC's Pre-Season Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season.
