ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The sixth-ranked ACU Wildcats had no trouble with No. 45 Mesa State on Wednesday, knocking off the Lady Mavericks, 5-0, in the first round of the NCAA Division II women's national tennis tournament at Sanlando Park.
The win pushes the Wildcats to 21-8 on the season, while Mesa State ends its season at 21-9. The Wildcats now go on to play a Thursday quarterfinal match at 3 p.m. (central time) against either No. 1 BYU-Hawaii or No. 3 Lynn (Fla.), which was still being played late Wednesday night because of a lightning delay.
The Wildcats lost just two points in the entire match, both of them in doubles matches.
The Wildcats' No. 3 doubles tandem of
Micah Hermsdorf and
Lauren White posted the team's first point with an 8-0 win over Alison Grush and Skyler Nelson.
The No. 1 doubles team of
Julia Mongin and
Jaclyn Walker followed with an 8-1 win over Kaitlan Sera and Kelleen Sera, and then
Cassie Carver and
Hannah Kelley capped the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win over Victoria Sargent and Kate Lowder.
Kelley made it a 4-0 match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cyndie Curtman at No. 5 singles, and then Hermsdorf put the finishing touches on the 5-0 win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles.
