EDMOND, Okla. – Central Oklahoma blistered the course Tuesday, firing a final-round 271 to pull away from ACU and win the team title at the UCO/Kickingbird Classic.
The Bronchos' 9-under-par final-round score left them at 865 for the tournament, while the second-place Wildcats finished at 884 after firing a final-round 285, the second-best round of the day. Cameron was third at 888 after a final-round 291 with Washburn in fourth at 895 and Midwestern State in fifth at 904.
The Bronchos, Wildcats, Aggies and Mustangs figure to be the top four contenders for the Lone Star Conference championship, which will be up for grabs April 18-19 at the Randolph Oaks Golf Course in San Antonio. The Wildcats will have next week off to prepare to defend their conference championship.
After being ACU's top finisher in al four of its previous tournaments this spring, three-time winner Alex Carpenter finished tied for ninth in the individual medalist standings at 221 (77-73-71). ACU senior Cyril Bouniol – who has played well this spring and is the defending NCAA Division II individual national champion – finished tied for third at 216 after three straight rounds of 2-over-par 72.
While the Wildcats had three players finish in the top nine – Tyler Sheppard also finished tied for ninth at 221 (76-73-72) – the Bronchos had four players in the top nine, including three in the top three. Colby Shrum won the individual championship at 215 (74-72-69) with teammates Josh Creel and Baer Aneshansley finishing tied for third at 216. Andrew Green finished tied for ninth at 221.
