Wildcats knock off Tigers, 4-1

ABILENE – Will Calhoun's two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning broke open a 1-1 game Friday afternoon as the 19th-ranked ACU Wildcats knocked off East Central, 4-1, in Lone Star Conference baseball action at Crutcher Scott Field.

The Wildcats (2-2 overall and 2-2 in the LSC) will return to action Saturday with a 1:05 p.m. doubleheader.  The loss drops the Tigers to 2-5 and 0-4.

The teams were locked in a good pitcher's duel through 6 1/2 innings before the Wildcats were finally able to break through in the bottom of the seventh.  With runners at first and third and two outs, the left-handed hitting Calhoun punched a 1-0 pitch the opposite way to drive in both Reed Watson and Marcus Uechi to give ACU a 3-1 lead.

ACU – which took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Peter Goudeau's first home run – tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Abe Williams reached on a walk and then scored on a three-base throwing error by ECU pitcher Donny Williams.

Cameron Watten gave the Wildcats a solid start on the mound, hurling five innings and giving up just three hits and one run while walking three and striking out three Tigers.  Brent Bray got the win in relief, giving up just two hits and striking out two batters in two innings.

Kris Carlson closed it with two perfect innings of relief, striking out three Tigers to pick up his first save.
