Cyril Bouniol fired the low round of the tournament Wednesday as he moved into a tie for second place in the individual medalist chase at the NCAA Division II national championship golf tournament at Sagmore Golf Club.
Bouniol started the day tied for 20th after shooting a 4-over-par 76 in the first round on Tuesday. However, he answered that on Wednesday by posting the tournament's first sub-70 round as he shot a 4-under-par 68 to finish the day at even-par 144 through two rounds.
Bouniol trails Ben Lasso of Queens University of Charlotte leads the medalist standings with a 1-under-par 143 after shooting rounds of 73 and 70. Bouniol is tied for second with Chico State's Kyle Souza, who is at even-par 144 after posting rounds of 74 and 70.
Bouniol started his day on the back nine and got off to a good start with a birdie on the par-4 10th hole. He then birdied the par-4 12th and the par-5 14th hole to get to 3-under-par on the day. But bogeys at the par-4 15th and par-3 17th dropped him to 1-under-par on the day (3-over-par for the tournament).
But he birdied his 10th and 11th holes to get back to 3-under-par for the day before three straight pars. A bogey on the par-4 sixth dropped him to 2-under-par on the day (2-under for the tournament) before he posted birdies on his 16th and 17th holes to get to 4-under-par for the day. He finished his round with a par on the par-4 ninth hole as he finished the day even par for the tournament.
