Wildcats upend Cameron, 9-0

LAWTON, Okla. -- The ACU men's tennis team put an end to its four-match losing streak in resounding fashion Wednesday afternoon with a 9-0 win over Cameron at the CU Tennis Complex.

The win clinched the Lone Star Conference regular-season championship for the Wildcats, who are now 14-11 on the season.  The victory was also important for post-season consideration as ACU is likely to end the season ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division II South Central Region behind Incarnate Word and St. Edward's.

But Wednesday was about two things: getting back in the win column and knocking off the Wildcats' newest rival on its home court.

"We've got a lot of talent on ths team, but it's a pretty young team and it just seems like it's taken a while for the light to come on for some of these guys," ACU head coach Hutton Jones said.  "This was a really good win for us as we head into the conference tournament (next weekend in Oklahoma City) and then the regional tournament."

The Wildcats got off to a great start, dominating doubles play by winning all three matches.  ACU's No. 1 team of Luke Hawk and Bryan Joiner -- unranked in the region -- knocked off Cameron's No. 1 team of Diego Troiano and Carlos Viscarra -- ranked No. 6 in the region -- by the score of 8-6.

In singles play, ACU won three three-set matches to take the match.
