WACO -- The 25th-ranked ACU Wildcats split a pair of matches against NCAA Division I opponents on Saturday, knocking off Prairie View A&M before falling to eighth-ranked Baylor at the Baylor Tennis Center.
The Wildcats beat Prairie View A&M, 6-0, early Saturday morning before falling to the Bears, 7-0. The Wildcats are now 11-7 on the season before they go to Birmingham, Ala., to play in the Blue-Gray Classic next week (April 1-3).
The Wildcats didn't have any trouble with the Panthers of Prairie View as ACU swept all three doubles matches to win that point and take a 1-0 lead into singles. ACU then won each of the five completed singles matches in straight sets. The teams didn't finish the No. 3 singles match between ACU's
Luke Hawk and Ronald Chidzikwe because ACU had to get ready to play Baylor.
The Bears and Wildcats waged a heated battle at No. 1 doubles where the Wildcats' team of
Luke Hawk and
John Strahl had four match points against the Baylor team of Jordan Rux and Attila Bucko. But the Bears were able to pull out the win to set the stage for a sweep of the three doubles matches.
The Bears then won in straight sets at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 6 singles to take match. Baylor now owns a 7-3 mark all-time against ACU, includinga 5-1 record in Waco.
