EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The 25th-ranked ACU Wildcats won their fifth straight match Wednesday afternoon, knocking off Southern Indiana, 6-3, in non-conference men's tennis action.
The win pushes the Wildcats to 7-5 on the season, while Southern Indiana falls to 11-2. ACU will conclude its Spring Break trip Thursday when it plays Northern Kentucky at 2 p.m. in Covington, Ky.
The Wildcats led 2-1 after doubles play and could have swept the doubles if not for a 9-8 (13-11) win at No. 2 by the USI team of Juan Quiroz and Joseph Boesing over ACU's tandem of
Eldad Campbell and
Brett Proctor.
But both Campbell and Proctor won their singles matches as ACU won four of six singles matches to take the win. Campbell beat Diego Gimenez at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, while Proctor knocked off Ben Hamm at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-1.
"This was a good test for us," ACU head coach
Hutton Jones said. "I was really impressed with Southern Indiana, but I thought we really came out ready to play. The match against Northern Kentucky will be a good way to wrap up this trip. They've got a good team, and it'll be a good test for our guys."
