Collums wins national award

ABILENE – ACU offensive coordinator Ken Collums has been selected as the winner of the 2010 FootballScoop Division II Coordinator of the Year, presented by SpeedTracs.
Under Collums' direction, the Wildcats – who finished the season 11-1 and won their second outright Lone Star Conference championship in the last three seasons – scored more than 30 points in every game this season as they posted the first 11-0 regular-season record in school history.
"I'm honored to be named the winner of this award," Collums said. "There are a lot of great coaches in Division II football that really work hard, and to be selected from that group is truly an honor.
"When you get an award like this, it reminds you that the individual award is not about one person," he said. "It's about a team of people working together for a common cause. I want to thank (head coach Chris Thomsen) for trusting his staff enough to give us the freedom to come up with creative and innovative ways to perform our craft."
The Wildcats averaged 43 points and 473 yards of offense per game, ranking second in the nation in scoring offense and seventh in total offense. ACU led the nation in fewest turnovers (eight) and was first in touchdown-to-interception ratio (13 to 1).
Sophomore quarterback Mitchell Gale led the nation in touchdown to interception ratio (12.67 to 1 / 38 TDs to just three INTs) and finished third nationally in passing efficiency.
"What Ken has done for our offense over the last six seasons is remarkable," ACU head coach Chris Thomsen said. "I can't imagine a better coach, both on and off the field. He gets the best from his players and he teaches them to be great leaders. What he did with Mitchell this year was really special."
Collums' offenses have been some of the best in the nation since 2006, and they have been a large part of ACU's five straight trips to the NCAA Division II playoffs.
"The yards and points we put up are great, but what I'm most proud of is that we led the nation in fewest turnovers," Collums said. "Offenses come in different shapes and sizes, but every offense has to protect the ball on every play, and we were the best in the country at doing that this season. We preach ball security every day, and I'm proud of our guys for taking that to heart this season."
Previous winners of the Division II Coordinator of the Year award are Tim Beck (Pitt State, 2008) and Scott Preston (Arkansas Tech, 2009).
