KINGSVILLE – For the fourth time in five seasons an ACU lineman has been named a National Finalists for the Gene Upshaw Award as Trevis Turner was named one of two finalists from Super Region 4 as announced on Wednesday.
Turner has started every game at right tackle for the Wildcats this season helping ACU remain the top team in the Lone Star Conference in scoring offense and second in total offense. The Wildcats have also remained in the top 10 in total offense averaging 476.6 yards per game.
The DeSoto native was second in balloting behind Northwest Missouri State's Brett Grozinger as the top two finalists in Super Region Four. Grozinger was named as a first place choice on 9-of-18 ballots and appeared on 15 ballots. Turner only received four first place votes, but was named on 14 ballots. First place votes were worth three points, second place votes were two points and third place votes were one point.
The top two vote getters from each of the four Super Regions advance to the national ballot that is announced after the season and sponsored by the Manheim Touchdown Club.
The Upshaw Award winner is selected by the Sports Information Directors of the 150 Football Playing NCAA Division II institutions and is named in honor of the late Gene Upshaw, former Executive Director of the National Football League Players Association. Gene Upshaw passed away August 20, 2008.
Upshaw was a standout lineman at Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M-Kingsville) before achieving All-Pro status six times during his 16 year career with the NFL Oakland Raiders. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987, his first year of eligibility and served as the NFLPA Executive Director from 19983 until his death in 2008. Upshaw is the only player in NFL history to play in three Super Bowls in three different decades – in the 60's, 70's and 80's. He was voted into the College Hall of Fame in 1987.
