CANYON – Nationally ranked ACU used a series of runs to knock off Texas Woman's in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon, 3-0 at The Box in Canyon.
The 22nd-ranked Wildcats raced to a 5-0 lead in the first set and lead 11-2 before the Pioneers realized what hit them. ACU rallied behind three service aces in the first set, five total in the match, and hitting a sizzling .300 winning 25-14 in the first set.
In the second set the Wildcats only committed three errors and improved their hitting at .324 clip. Using a 6-0 run ACU held an 11-6 lead after breaking a six all tie. TWU would close the gap to 16-14 but would get no closer after a pair of Shawna Hines kills pushed the Wildcats to an 18-14 lead.
The Wildcats would go on another 6-1 run as Kalynne Allen would knock down a kill on the sideline and team with Neely Borger for a block giving ACU a 25-17 win.
Both teams battled trading points in the third set as TWU took 16-19 lead late in the second set. A kill from Allen and Jordan Schilling pulled the Wildcats even at 19 forcing a Pioneer's timeout.
A TWU attack error and a service ace from Madelyn Robinett gave ACU the lead 22-19 before a Pioneer kill ended a 6-0 Wildcat run. The Pioneers would tie the game but a kill from Schilling and Hines sandwiched a TWU error to push the Wildcats to a 25-22 win.
ACU advances to the second round of the tournament and will face Angelo State who defeated Central Oklahoma in the first match of the day. The Wildcats and Rambelles will tipoff at 5 p.m. at The Box in Canyon. Fans can continue watching all matches streamed live on lonestarconference.org or by following the tournament central link.
