ABILENE – The early fall season success of the ACU men's golf team has caught the attention of NCAA Division II observers as the Wildcats are ranked in the top 10 in the country in two separate national polls.
The Wildcats are ranked No. 2 in the country according to the newest poll published by Golfstat, which ranks teams based on head-to-head comparison. ACU checks into that poll at No. 2, just behind No. 1-ranked Western Washington.
The rest of the top 10 in the Golfstat poll is Chico State at No. 3, North Alabama at No. 4, Central Oklahoma at No. 5, Midwestern State at No. 6, Cal State-Monterey Bay at No. 7, Sonoma State at No. 8, Colorado-Colorado Springs at No. 9 and Hawaii-Hilo at No. 10.
The Wildcats are ranked No. 10 in the latest Golf World / NIKE Golf Division II Coaches' poll, which was released last Friday. Defending national champion Florida Southern tops the poll with eight of 15 first-place votes.
Barry (Fla.) is No. 2, followed by North Alabama at No. 3, Georgia College and State at No. 4, Nova Southeastern at No. 5, Lynn (Fla.) at No. 6, West Florida at No. 7, Chico State at No. 8, Barton (N.C.) at No. 9 and ACU at No. 10.
The Wildcats were ranked No. 15 in the coaches' pre-season poll. However, a strong second-place finish at the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate and a win at last week's Oklahoma Match-Play Championships helped the Wildcats move into the nation's top 10.
Other Lone Star Conference schools ranked in the coaches' poll are Central Oklahoma (one first-place vote) at No. 12 and Midwestern State at No. 23.
