Carpenter wins big tournament

FORD CITY, Ala. – ACU sophomore Alex Carpenter won the individual medalist title Tuesday afternoon at the Division II Preview Tournament at the Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals Fighting Joe Course.

Carpenter followed his first-round 71 with a 4-under-par 68 on Tuesday to finish at 5-under-par 139.  He won the title by one stroke over Chico State's Kyle Souza (140) and two strokes over his teammate, Cyril Bouniol, who was third at 141.

Carpenter's play helped the Wildcats finish fourth in the tournament, which had a field that might be stronger than the field that will play on the same course in May for the NCAA Division II national tournament.

ACU followed Monday's 289 with a 293 on Tuesday to finish at 582.  Chico State won the team title with rounds of 279-292 for a 571 total.  Tournament host North Alabama – playing on its home course – finished second at 573 (289-284) with Indianapolis in fourth at 580 (288-292), ACU in fourth at 582 and Valdosta State in fifth at 585 (290-295).

Following Carpenter and Bouniol, Tyler Sheppard finished 34th for the Wildcats at 149 (73-76), Drew Norris was 58th at 156 (75-81) and Trey Sullivan was 70th at 159 (81-78).
