PUEBLO, Colo. -- One night after suffering through one of their worst shooting nights of the season, the ACU Wildcats blistered the nets in a 72-60 win over Colorado State-Pueblo in the final game of the Chuck Stephens Classic at Massari Arena.
The win pushes the Wildcats to 8-5 on the season, while the Thunderwolves fall to 7-4. ACU will return to action Thursday when it takes on No. 25 Southeastern Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. in Durant, Okla.
In Saturday's 60-54 loss to Regis (Colo.), the Wildcats shot just 39 percent in the game, but Sunday evening the Wildcats shot 60.4 percent (29 of 48), including 63 percnet (17 of 27) in the first half. The Wildcats led 40-33 at halftime and never trailed in the second half.
The Thunderwolves, however, closed to within two points twice in the second half, including 56-54 with 6:46 to play after a pair of free throws by Kendall Babler.
Autumn Whitaker, however, answered with a 3-pointer for ACU, followed by another 3-pointer by
Kelsey Darby-Holson to push ACU's lead back to 62-54 with 5:39 to play.
After CSU-Pueblo cut the lead to 62-58 with 4:41 to play, the Wildcats sprinted away with a 9-0 run over a span of 2:06 to push their lead to 71-58.
Kat Kundmueller had a 3-pointer, followed by a jumper by
Jody Meyer, a layup by Kundmueller and a layup by Meyer.
Jody Meyer led the Wildcats with another double-double effort of 20 points and 11 rebounds, while twin sister
Jamie Meyer had 18 points and both were voted to the all-tournament team. Darby-Holson finished with 10 points, while Kundmueller had eight points, seven rebounds and 10 assists.
