EL PASO -- Playing with and against a field full of NCAA Division I players, former ACU standouts Bernard Scott and Johnny Knox proved they belonged on the field Saturday as each had solid games in the Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Game.
Although the Texas team lost the game, 27-24, in front of 37.054 fans at the Sun Bowl, both Scott and Knox left no doubt that they can play at a higher level as Scott led the game in rushing yards and Knox caught a touchdown pass.
Scott -- the 2008 Harlon Hill Award winner as the NCAA Division Player of the Year -- finished the contest with a game-high 62 rushing yards on just 12 carries, averaging 5.2 yards per carry. Knox had three catches for 55 yards and had a 28-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter that cut the Texas deficit to 20-14 with 7:29 left in the third quarter.
Texas trailed 20-17 after a 27-yard field goal from UTEP's Jose Martinez on the first play of the fourth quarter. But Florida Atlantic's Frantz Joseph returned an interception to the Texas 31 on the next Texas possession. Purdue's Chris Painter then threw a 9-yard scoring pass to San Jose State's Yonus Davis for a 27-17 lead.
Both Scott and Knox will now continue their preparations for the NFL Draft Combine, which is scheduled for Feb. 18-24 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Scott and Knox -- who were both standouts in the week-long practice sessions in El Paso -- are two of just a handful of sub-Division I players to earn invitations to the combine.
