KINGSTON, Jamaica ? Four current or former Abilene Christian University track and field athletes earned sports on their respective country's Olympic teams, including three on the Jamaican national team.
Former eight-time NCAA Division II hurdles champion Delloreen Ennis-London finished second in the 100 meter hurdles at the Jamaican Senior Trials on Sunday, clocking in at 12.57 to earn a spot on her third Olympic team. Ennis-London finished fourth in the event at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, before seeing her medal bid end in the semifinals of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Ennis-London is only the second ACU athlete to earn a spot on three Olympic teams, joining Tim Bright, who competed for the United States in 1984 (Los Angeles), 1988 (Seoul, South Korea) and 1992 (Barcelona, Spain).
Also at the Jamaican trials, former ACU national champion Marvin Essor finished fifth in the 400 meters (46.04) and will run on the Jamaican 4x400 relay team. Essor ? who will be making his first Olympic appearance ? won the 400 meters at the 2005 NCAA Division II outdoor track and field championships and has been a volunteer coach for the Wildcats for the last three years.
The other former Wildcat to qualify for the Jamaican Olympic team is Richard Phillips, who won the 110 meter hurdles in 13.57. Phillips, who also competed in the 2004 Olympic Games, was an all-America athlete for the Wildcats in 2002 before transferring to George Mason University where he competed for three years. The other former Wildcat who competed at the Jamaican trials was Tracey Barnes, who finished 18th in the 400 meters (55.24). Barnes, who won 14 NCAA Division II national championships from 1996-99, hadn't competed in more than five years before deciding to make a bid for a spot in the Olympics.
One current Wildcat athlete, sprinter Wanda Hutson, qualified for the Trinidad Olympic Team as she finished fifth at her country's trials in the 100 meters (11.54) to earn a spot on the 4x100 relay team.
