ABILENE -- For the second time this week, a pole vaulter from Abilene Christian University has turned in the top mark in the nation in NCAA Division II.
At Abilene Christian's all-comers meet Thursday night at Gray Stadium, Landon Ehlers won the B section of the men's event with a vault of 17-1.5. That eclipsed the vault of 17-1 here Sunday in the Lone Star Conference championships by Stephen Toler.
Seth Harris, competing unattached, won section A at 17-4.5 In the women's pole vault, former Wildcat vaulter Angie Aguilar set a stadium record with a clearance of 13-5.75.
Other winners here Thursday included two former Abilene High School performers now competing for Texas Tech. Shawon Harris was a double winner in the hurdles with times of 13.58 in the 110-meter race and a personal best of 50.25 in the 400 race.
Also, Lyle Leong, also a wide receiver for the Red Raiders in football, won the high jump at 6-7.5 and was fifth in the long jump at 24-2.5. Former ACU jumper Kevin Dilworth was the long jump winner at 25-3.25.
Two other former Wildcats who won their specialties were Stephanie Warren, a national champion in NCAA Division II and 2004 Olympic trials qualifier, in the women's triple jump (42-2.75) and Marvin Essor, gold medalist in the 2005 World University Games, in the 400 (46.31).
The Wildcats won the men's 400-meter relay in 40.53, Julius Nyango followed his LSC title in the 800 Sunday with a win Thursday in 1:49.33, Nick Jones took the shot put (53-3.75), Eric Brown won the steeplechase (10:20.23) and Nic Kazingo was the 5,000 winner (14:44.11). Shawna-Kaye Thompson gave ACU another win with a quick 1:00.33 in the women's 400-meter hurdles.
Ehlers, who was sixth last year as a freshman at the NCAA Division II outdoor meet, opened with first-attempt clearances of 15-10.5 and 16-4.5, then he passed at 16-8.25. He topped 17-1.5 on his second attempt, then failed three times at 17-5.
Aguilar, who won both the 2006 indoor and outdoor titles in NCAA Division II, needed only one vault at 12-6, 13-1 and 13-5.75 before missing three times at 13-9.25.
Thursday's meet was ACU's final competition before the NCAA Division II national meet May 22-24 in Walnut, Calif.
