ACU records wins at Penn, Drake

PHILADELPHIA -- The ACU men's shuttle hurdle relay team won the program's first Penn Relays relay championship since 1995 on Friday by winning the event at the 113th running of the Penn Relays Carnival at historic Franklin Field.
The Wildcats' team of Andrew McDowell, Davy Manga, Chris Pounds and Matt Pugh turned in a time of 58.40 to just barely hold off second-place Rhode Island, which turned in a time of 58.92. Hampton was third at 59.57 , while Coastal Carolina was fourth at 59.78 and Maryland-Baltimore County was fifth at 59.88.
The last time ACU won a men's relay event at the Penn Relays was 1995 when the sprint medley and 4x800 relay teams won their respective events. The sprint medley relay team of Joseph Styles, Kevin Dilworth, Robert Guy and Savieri Ngidhi was inducted into the Penn Relays Hall of Fame last year. Friday's shuttle hurdle relay championship is ACU's ninth Penn Relays relay championship since 1958.
Also on Friday at the Penn Relays, the ACU men's sprint medley relay team finished 12th (3:24.77), while Matt Pugh was 26th in the 110 hurdles (14.59). Vladyslav Gorbenko was 10th in the collegiate section of the long jump with a makr of 22-6.25. On the women's side, ACU was 12th in the 4x200 relay (1:37.50) and 15th in the sprint medley relay (4:01.20).
ACU pole vaulters Angie Aguilar and Keyle Dennis were in action halfway across the continent at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, and both had good results. Aguilar repeated as the women's champion in the vault with a mark of 13-3.50, tying her season-best mark that she set earlier in the outdoor season at the UTEP Springtime Invitational in El Paso. On the men's side, Dennis was fourth with a mark of 16-6.75. Both Aguilar and Dennis have already automatically qualified for next month's NCAA Division II outdoor championship meet in Charlotte, N.C.
