Two ACU doubles teams win titles

Steenkamp-Carstens, Brown-Lindloff win LSC championships

WICHITA FALL -- ACU's No. 1 men's and women's doubles teams won their respective Lone Star Conference titles Saturday at the LSC Fall Individual Championship tennis tournament.

On the men's side, Casper Steenkamp and George Carstens beat top-seeded Tim Hinst and Rafael Zurita, 8-6, to win the No. 1 doubles title and the distinction as the 2005-06 LSC men's doubles champions.

On the women's side, Meagan Brown and Holly Lindloff captured the No. 1 doubles championship and the LSC title with a 9-7 win over the top-seeded team of Ana Fernandez and Dasha Segenchuk of East Central University.  Segenchuk, the ITA Central Region singles champion, lost in the No. 1 singles final to Cameron's Caroline Vera-Vera, 7-6, 6-2.

The Wildcats had finalists in 12 of the 18 brackets, including in seven of the nine men's brackets.  On the men's side, George Carstens won the No. 2 singles championship to capture the only other title for the Wildcats.

At No. 1 singles, ACU senior Casper Steenkamp and his nemesis, Brett Emerson of Midwestern State, hooked up in another battle, and this time Emerson came out on top in another three-set match.  Emerson won the first set 6-3 before falling 6-2 in the second set.  The two battled through a long third set before Emerson finally came out on top, 10-5, to win the LSC men's singles championship.

Last month in Abilene, Steenkamp beat Emerson, 7-6, 6-2, to win the ITA Central Region singles championship and earn a spot in next weekend's ITA Small College National Championship Tournament in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.  Last May at the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament in Abilene, Emerson beat Steenkamp to help the Indians rally to a 5-4 team win and deny the Wildcats a spot in the NCAA Division II national tournament.

On the women's side, Brown beat Karlien Lotter of East Central, 2-6, 6-1, 10-6, to win the No. 2 singles title, the only other title for the ACU women.

Next weekend in Florida, Steenkamp will be joined by Lana Pavlin and Lindloff, who won the ITA Central Region women's doubles championship.
