Four former Wildcats earn medals
Moore wins decathlon gold; Grimes disqualified
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Four former ACU track and field standouts won Pan American Games medals Aug. 5-9 at Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, including three for the United States.
Former NCAA Division II national decathlon champion Stephen Moore ('99) won the decathlon to deliver the U.S. a gold medal, while reigning U.S. 400-meter hurdle champion Eric Thomas ('96) finished second in his event to earn the silver medal. Former NCAA Division II high jump and triple jump national champion Terrance Woods ('02) finished third in his event at 7-3.25.
The other former Wildcat to win a medal was former national champion sprinter Nic Alexander ('03), who ran the lead leg on Trinidad's 4x100 relay team, which won a silver medal. Alexander also placed seventh in the 100 meters.
Former NCAA Division II national champions Mickey Grimes ('99) won the 100 meters and ran on the winning U.S. 4x100 relay team, but his gold medals were later stripped after he tested positive for traces of the stimulant ephedrine that were found in his system.
Another former ACU national champion, Kevin Dilworth ('96) , finished sixth in the long jump for the U.S. Moore's gold in the decathlon is the first individual gold medal ever for an ACU athlete at the Pan American Games.
Grimes' positive test for ephedrine carries a maximum penalty of disqualification from the meet and a public warning. Ephedrine, commonly found in over-the-counter dietary supplements and cold medications, is on the list of prohibited substances.
