ASU runs away from ACU, 78-63
Rambelles use two hot starts to defeat Wildcats
ABILENE – Angelo State used a quick start to each half Tuesday night to take a 78-63 win over ACU in a Lone Star Conference South Division women's basketball game at Moody Coliseum.
The Rambelles (12-1 overall and 1-0 in the LSC South) jumped out to a 23-5 lead in the first half, and then used an 11-4 run to start the second half to seal the win. The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Wildcats, who are now 8-7 and 0-1. ACU will return to action Thursday at 6 p.m. when it hosts Tarleton State in an LSC crossover contest at Moody Coliseum.
The Rambelles looked as if they might make Tuesday's game a blowout as they jumped to the big 18-point lead in the game's first 6 minutes, 44 seconds. Angelo State had four 3-pointers in the run that put the Wildcats in a huge hole early.
As hot as Angelo State was from the field, that's how cold the Wildcats were. ACU was just 2 for its first 10 shots from the field, and by the time that second shot fell (a 3-pointer by Jackie Vinson with 14:06 left in the first half), the Rambelles led 18-5.
However, ACU fought back, thanks to foul trouble on Angelo State center Kim Moore, who picked up her third foul with 11:04 to play and her team leading 26-10. ACU center Melanie Carter took advantage of Moore's absence, scoring 12 points to lead a 20-5 ACU run that cut the ASU lead to 31-30 with 2:10 left in the first half.
The rest of the first half was a see-saw affair with the Rambelles settling for a 38-34 advantage at the break.
Both teams, however, started the second half just as they did the first half. The Rambelles opened the second half on a 7-2 run with ACU's only points coming from Carter at the 16:56 mark. ACU got the lead down to six on two occasions in the second half, including the last time at 62-56 with 6:16 to play on a free throw by Meredith Doyle.
The Rambelles, though, went on a 10-2 run over the next five minutes to seal the win. ACU was 0 for 6 from the field during that stretch.
