2008 (Redshirt freshman): Saw action in eight games, but most of that time was spent on special teams. Did not catch a pass during the season and had three tackles (two solo) on special teams. Spent the 2007 season as a redshirt.

High school: Played both wide receiver and running back at Celina. A three-year letterman at Celina HS, Kessler helped his team to a 16-0 Class 2A Division II state championship season as a junior. As a junior he averaged 7.9 yards per carry and scored nine touchdowns while averaging 11 yards per catch and catching five touchdown passes. He was a first team all-district running back, leading Celina to the state championship. As a senior, Kessler was injured in the second game of the season and watched his teammates finish the season 15-1 and the runner-up in Class 3A Division II with a 22-19 loss to Liberty Hill in the state championship game. Kessler also lettered in track and field.
