Former Abilene Christian running back Sam Hicks scored his first career touchdown of his Canadian Football League career as his Toronto Argonauts defeated Ottawa 44-24 on Saturday afternoon.
Hicks cut left, scampered 7 yards and dove over the goalline and went into his signature karate celebration which Wildcat fans became accustomed to seeing. The touchdown with 1:10 remaining in the 4th quarter sealed the Argonauts' first victory of their young season.
Hicks, who was an All-American all-purpose player in 2024 at ACU, finished the game with 16 carries for 79 yards along with 3 catches for 10 yards.
Entering the CFL preseason, Hicks was the 4th string running back. But he climbed Toronto's depth chart and became the starter for the season opener against Montreal on June 12, gaining 82 total yards.
"I literally had to tell myself, 'OK, this is just like ACU. This is just like Abilene Christian,'" said Hicks about having to earn his playing time with the Argos. "I had to make my reps count, not count the reps.
"I've just got to keep going and keep being me. That's what everybody tells me: 'be you.' So that's what I'm going to do. Put in work, work, work, play and have fun."
During his lone season at ACU, Hicks ran for 1,333 yards, the 3rd most in the program's single-season record book, and scored 17 total touchdowns.
Toronto next faces the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday, June 26 at 8 p.m. CT.
