ACU Plays Home Opening Games on Wednesday

The Abilene Christian softball team plays its first home games of the season on Wednesday by welcoming South Dakota State to Poly Wells Field.

The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. with the second game starting approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Both games can be viewed for free on WAC International.

ACU (0-5) started its season at Texas A&M's Aggie Classic last week. The Wildcats held tight with the No. 11 Aggies, trailing 2-0 into the 5th inning before A&M tacked on additional runs. ACU showed fight as the tournament went along, dropping a 2-1 game to Bryant on a walk-off hit, tying Utah State in the 6th inning, and taking an early lead against Bryant in the finale.

Junior Emerson Meggers, a transfer from Utah State, finished the first weekend with a .417 batting average and all five of her hits going for extra bases. Meggers recorded two doubles, two triples, and a three-run home run in addition to scoring twice.

Ella Beeman appeared in three of ACU's five games and struck out nine batters over her 12.2 innings pitched. Leah Meyer, an NJCAA All-American at Florida SouthWestern, also saw action in three games, including a complete game against Utah State last Friday.

South Dakota State (4-1) is in the middle of a week-and-a-half long Texas road trip. At the East Texas A&M Leadoff, the Jackrabbits defeated Stephen F. Austin, Bucknell, and ETAMU twice. South Dakota State is scheduled to play Baylor at 5 p.m. Tuesday. After the doubleheader in Abilene, the Jackrabbits head back to Stephenville for a five-game tournament at Tarleton State.

ACU will quickly head to Austin to take part in the Bevo Classic this weekend. The Cats face the defending national champion, and preseason No. 1 ranked, Texas Longhorns at 6 p.m. Thursday on SEC Network+. ACU will also compete against Northern Illinois, Syracuse  and No. 25 Ohio State in the event.
