ABILENE - The ACU women's tennis team stumbled in a back-and-forth match against Grand Canyon on Saturday, losing 4-3.
Rainy, cold and windy weather forced the teams inside to the Teague Special Events Center.
Grand Canyon started the match by winning the doubles point thanks to victories at No. 1 and 2. Maria Cascos and Olivia Sears teamed up to earn a 6-3 victory in No. 3.
No. 1 singles player Masha Vrsalovic quickly took control of her match and won in straight sets - 6-2, 6-1. Sears followed with a two-set win at the No. 2 position. Sears pulled out a tiebreaker to earn the first set point, and then cruised in the second frame, winning 7-6, 6-2.
Cascos outlasted her competition for a 6-3, 7-6 triumph in in the No. 4 spot. But, GCU followed with quick wins at No. 3 and No. 5.
In the deciding No. 6 singles, ACU's Eva Arranz and GCU's Peyton Duckett went the distance with Arranz winning the first set, and Duckett claiming in the second. Duckett clinched the third set, and the overall team match, with a 7-5 decision.
The Wildcats continue their three-match homestand on Friday, April 11 against North Texas at 2:30 p.m. ACU's Purple Match follows the next day -- Saturday, April 12 -- versus rival Tarleton State. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
